After a loss to his former partner at Backlash, Masters & Shelton Benjamin lost to Carlito & Rob Van Dam the next night on RAW. The following week, Masters found himself against both RVD and Benjamin as part of a Fatal Four Way Match for the Intercontinental Championship; but just like the previous week, Masters was pinned by RVD. He had one more chance on the May 15 RAW, but while his team was victorious in a 3-on-2 Handicap Texas Tornado Championship Match, it was partner Shelton Benjamin who scored the winning pinfall to claim the championship. A bad month of May concluded for Masters on May 22 when he tapped out to WWE Champion John Cena's STFU in a non-title match. On the final RAW before Backlash, Masters was able to get the Master Lock on Carlito, but Carlito's team was able to defeat The Masterpiece's team in a Six-Man Tag Team Match.
